From his experience with Under Canvas to all of his sendy outdoor endeavors, we’re dishing the inside scoop. This guy really does it all: fishing, ice climbing, slack lining, rafting, backpacking – you name it, he does it! Get to know Eli here.
Tell us about your journey. How did it start?
My journey in hospitality started at Under Canvas working as a revenue manager. I developed a lot of my analytical skills, business acumen, and a lot of great relationships.
To which parts of the country or the world has your hospitality career taken you?
I have spent time in Montana, Idaho, Colorado, Utah, and South Dakota working at different properties in a variety of different roles.
Who or what inspires you?
People who are good at what they do. It is inspiring to watch someone who is a master at their craft, be it in business or the outdoors.
What’s most important to you when building a strong team or culture?
The concept that we are all in this together. I think it is incredibly important to see leaders in your organization getting down and dirty to support the team. I have seen this time and time again from C-Suite leaders at GH. They are willing to scrub floors, clean bathrooms, install furniture, you name it… This sets the expectation high and sets an example for everyone else on the team.
What’s your guiding principle in the hospitality industry?
Make people feel welcome. Everything else seems to fall into place.
What’s your favorite new feature at Gravity Haus Vail?
The saunas, hot tub, and steam. Nothing feels better after a long day in the mountains.
Your go-to menu item at Slope Room? What about beverage?
Chicken sandwich and a margarita!
When you’re not at Gravity Haus Vail, what activities can we find you doing?
I love to ice climb, mountain bike, fly-fish, highline/slackline, rock climb, ski, and rafting.
Holy s**t! Those activities sound intense. What are your pro tips for getting started in some of the extreme outdoor activities?
Find a mentor or surround yourself with people who already have knowledge in the area. In almost every different sport I have learned I have had a mentor or friend that has helped teach me. Although, some things just take some trial and error.
Winter or summer?
Too close to call. I love the deep snow and fresh ice but catching big rainbows on the Eagle is pretty good too.
Ski or ride?
Ski, no debate there.
Most memorable outdoor experience?
I did a 13 day private Middle/Main Salmon river trip a few years back that was pretty special. It helped shape my love for adventure and the outdoors. Also, I just got back from Iceland about a month ago and that was a pretty close second.
What are you looking forward to in ‘22? Personally AND professionally?
- Professionally, I am looking forward to growing the GHV property into what I know it can be. With a fully remodeled product, we are slated to take on the world.
- I have some big international fishing trips lined up for next year that I am looking forward to.
