Sunrise and sunset uphill skiing — or skinning — offers a fresh perspective and a fun way to kick off or close out your work day. Skinning up and skiing down is a great mind-clearing cardio workout that gets you into nature and onto some of your favorite runs sans lift lines and crowds. Gather your favorite uphillers or go solo and listen to the birds and snowcats doing their thing.

Breckenridge Ski Resort
Access: Uphill access is free but an uphill access parking permit is required and can be obtained here.
Hours: Before 8:15 a.m. and after 4:30 p.m.
Parking: Free parking is offered in the North Gondola lot, Stables lot at Peak 8, and the Beaver Run Parking lot between 6 a.m. and resort opening time.
Routes: Ascend and descend on designated routes. Peak 7: Fort Mary B > Claimjumper > Pika > the T-bar hut. Peak 8 Base > Springmeier > Vista Haus Claimjumper > Pika > the T-bar hut. Peak 9: Silverthorne > Lower American > Cashier > Overlook > Peak 9 Patrol Hut.

Notes: No dogs allowed. Stay towards the center of the trail and away from the treeline to avoid mountain operations vehicles.
VAIL SKI RESORT
Access: Uphill access is free. No pass required.
Hours: Uphill travel is permitted 30 minutes after the lifts close until 15 minutes before first chair. Typically from 4:30 p.m. until 8 a.m.
Parking: Pay parking is available in nearby garages.
Routes: Riva in Golden Peak from Vail Village, Simba in Lionshead
Hotline: Call Vail Trails Hotline at 970-754-1023 for closures and trail recommendations before you head out.
Notes: No dogs allowed. Stay towards the side of the trail. Wear brightly colored clothing or reflective materials. Carry a light or headlamp.
WINTER PARK SKI RESORT
Access: An uphill armband for the season costs $25 and can be obtained here. Your armband must be visible while skinning. Proceeds benefit three local organizations: Grand County Search & Rescue, Colorado Rapid Avalanche Deployment dog teams, and Friends of Berthoud Pass.
Hours: During and outside of resort operating hours. Yep, you read that right. You can skin uphill during resort downhill operational hours.
Parking: Resort lots and parking garage
Routes: Uphill access is allowed on trails that are open for skiing, with a few exceptions. About a third of Winter Park’s terrain is available for uphilling. Check out the winter uphill trail map.
Notes: Respect strobe lights and signage and stay far away from any snow cat. Dogs accompanying an uphill user are allowed on mountain between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m.
