2020 is a year of resiliency for all of us, forcing individuals, businesses, towns and governments to dig deep for our resolve and resiliency in the face of change. Breckenridge is no stranger to this type of adversity, and this interactive presentation will tell the stories of how Breckenridge has grown, suffered and prospered through the years.
After you’re settled in, we’ll serve you a Cabin Juice Gold Miner cocktail, then Leigh Girvin will take you back to the early 1800’s as she paints a picture of Breckenridge’s resiliency through the years. Breckenridge’s boom years began in 1858 with the discovery of gold. For decades, great wealth was extracted from the mountains. Then mining returns started to drop. By the middle of the 20th Century, Breckenridge declined to near ghost-town status. How did people cope? How did the town survive? And what saved Breckenridge?
About the Speaker: Leigh Girvin grew up in Breckenridge, Colorado, arriving as a young girl in the early 1970s with her family. After graduating from Breckenridge Elementary School and Summit High School, she went back east to study at Amherst College, then hurried home to Colorado as soon as she could. Leigh served as the executive director of two local non-profits before embarking on her history career. She currently works as a guide and docent for the Breckenridge Heritage Alliance, and records oral histories from long-time and long-ago locals for archival preservation. Leigh has also served on various planning commissions for over 25 years, helping to shape her community. She is the current reigning Ullr Queen, and is a featured speaker for 2020 TedX Breckenridge (George Johnson: Mountain Man of Modern Breckenridge).
